Track and Field Update

Congratulations to all of the students who participated and “gave it their all” at our school Track and Field event last week! We had a great day and the weather cooperated for us:)    A huge  thank-you to all of the parents who helped us out that day…we can’t run this event without your assistance.

Our School Team has been finalized and those students who will be going on to the Tier 2 Event were notified today.  These athletes should be bringing home their information package tonight, which includes; letter, schedule of events, parent/guardian information and the Student Athlete Information and Permission booklet.  (There is an error in the letter regarding due date of forms and payment.  The actual due date is Friday June 15th).

Please make sure the Student Athlete Information and Permission Form is filled in comletely, including having the student “sign” at the end of part “A” and also at the end of part “D”.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Widdup (email address provided on the letter).

Weather: We will be outside for a large portion of the day, so it is important that children are protected from the elements.  The event will run rain (light rain) or shine…so please check the weather forecast that morning and send your child suitably dressed for the weather.  (Including sunscreen and a protective hat if necessary).  Please also ensure that your child has their running shoes that day:)

Hydrationis extremely important to hydrate before and after events so please ensure your child has a water bottle CLEARLY LABELLED with their name.  Please remind your child to drink lots to avoid dehydration.

Parent Volunteers: We need many parent volunteers to help make this event successful. If you are able to help us out, please send a note in your child’s agenda indicating when you are able to help.  Thank-you in advance.

Jump Rope for Heart

Jump Rope for Heart 2018

Mary Hopkins has proudly been supporting the Heart and Stroke Foundation for many years with our annual “Jump Rope for Heart” event. Our campaign began on April 9th with a Kick-Off Assembly where students received their pledge envelopes and online registration information. Mary Hopkins has proudly been in the top 5 schools in HWDSB for fundraising for the past few years and we are very grateful to our community for all of their generous support. This year there is a national goal to get over 1 million students “jumping” as part of this campaign. Weather permitting, Mary Hopkins will be showing off their Jumping Skills on Monday May 7th during our outdoor Jump Rope for Heart Event (Raindate Wed. May 9th).

Swim Team Try-Outs

Parents of Grade 3-5 students –

We had a meeting today for students interested in trying out for our School Swim Team.  Starting next Tuesday, we will be having practices/try-outs for the next five weeks at the YMCA.  We are hoping to put together a team of students in preparation for the HWDSB County Swim Meet. The meet will be held at McMaster University on Monday November 13th at 1:00 p.m.   As part of the entry requirements, we need to hold 5 practices between now and the meet to help us prepare students and choose our team.  Interested students should be coming home with the information package and permission forms.  Please note:  If your child has already brought home forms for the Running Club/Cross Country…we will be using the same “Student Athlete Information Package” for both events.  When filling in the forms, you just need to indicate which activity (Running Club, Cross Country, Swim Team) in the “activity” line.

Our practices will be held at the Flamborough YMCA from 8:00-9:00 a.m. on the following dates:  Tuesdays: Oct.3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st

Looking forward to embarking on this wet and wild adventure with the students! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school or with a note in your child’s agenda.

Running Club and Cross Country

A lunchtime Running Club started this week and is being offered to any student in Grades 3-5.   Practices will take place at Nutrition Breaks over the next couple of weeks.  Students wishing to be chosen for the Cross-Country team must be present at these practices….but students are also welcome to join if they just want to run and not partake in the competitive aspect.  Interested students were invited to a meeting earlier this week where information on the club was shared and permission forms were distributed.    If any student missed the meeting but would still like to participate, they can come to any of the practices this week to find out more information and to obtain a permission form.

Track and Field

Our annual Track and Field school event was another great success…and for the first time in many years…we had no rain!!  Our Grade 2-5 students all put forth their best effort in all of their events…and pushed themselves to do their personal best.   A BIG thank-you to all of the volunteers who answered our call for help and were on hand to help time us time, measure, record, etc. that day as we could not have run the event without your help!

For those enquiring minds…students who placed 1st or 2nd in their event will be invited to attend the HWDSB Area Track and Field Event which will be held on Thursday June 22nd at Mohawk Sports Park in Hamilton.  We will also be making up Relay Teams in each grade…which would be the top 4 finishers in the 80m event.  The Track and Field Team will be put together in the next few days and permission forms for those students attending the Area meet will be sent home early next week.
